Figuring out how much scaffolding you need can feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Here we explain how to easily calculate the right amount of scaffolding for your house, so you don’t end up buying too little or too much.
1. Measure the house length and height
Start by measuring the length of the house (façade dimension) and the height up to the eaves.
Example:
If your house is 12 metres long and 6 metres high up to the eaves, you need to cover a façade of 12 × 6 metres = 72 m² of scaffolding.
Remember: If you want to go all the way around the house, multiply the façade length by the number of sides, usually four.
2. Calculate the entire building surface
For a two-storey house or a house with several sides to be painted, rendered or re-roofed, you need to calculate based on the total length of the exterior walls.
Formula:
House perimeter × height up to the eaves = total m² of scaffolding
Example:
(12 m + 8 m + 12 m + 8 m) × 6 m = 240 m² of scaffolding
3. Allow for gable ends and uneven ground
If the house has gable ends (for example a pitched roof), you’ll need to add a bit of extra height.
As a rule of thumb, allow for an extra 1–2 metres at the gable.
If you have sloping ground, it can be wise to add one extra section so you can adjust the level.
4. Choose the right package size
To make things easy, we’ve created ready-made scaffolding packages based on common house types:
| Packages | Area | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Small House | approx. 180 m² | Single-storey house |
| The Medium Villa | approx. 260 m² | 1.5-storey house |
| Entire Villa | approx. 354 m² | Two-storey house with stair tower |
You can find all packages here: View our scaffolding packages
5. Consider the duty rating
Scaffxpert’s scaffolds from Scafom RUX are approved according to load class 3, which means they can handle heavy construction work such as roof replacement, façade renovation and painting.
If you’re doing lighter work, such as window replacement, work class 2 is sufficient. However, we always recommend class 3 for stability and safety.
